Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements as per the qualification details or training package. Perspective students entering this course at Paragon Polytechnic must meet the following entry requirements:


Age requirements

Students must be a minimum age of 18 years or above at the time of course commencement.


Academic Requirements

Satisfactorily complete a minimum of Year 12 or equivalent (subject to the assessment and approval of the Paragon Polytechnic’s admission team).


International Student English Language Requirements

To enter this qualification, applicants must also meet English Language Requirements – IELTS (Academic) overall score of 5.5 or TOEFL IBT 46 or Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 162 or PTE Academic 42 or equivalent. English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:

Minimum five (5) years of study in English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Britain, America, South Africa or Ireland.

Completed in Australia in English a substantial component (at least 50%) of a qualification at AQF level 4 or higher.

Successfully completed in Australia in English the Senior Secondary Certificate of Education.

Completed a recognised ELICOS program and achieved an English Proficiency level of upper intermediate or equivalent.

Applicants without the documented evidence to demonstrate the required English language competence may undertake the Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment online to achieve a result of ACSF level 3 to meet Paragon’s English Language entry requirement.

Pre-training review

All learners will undertake a pre-training review to determine suitability for the course and student needs. The aim of the review is to identify their training needs through questions on previous education or training, relevance of the course to the applicant, and relevant experience. The Pre-training review will also aim to identify any support needs and possible RPL opportunities.

Through the pre-training review, learners will demonstrate that they have the necessary skills to successfully complete the course.

Paragon Polytechnic will identify any such barriers presented by learners during the pre-training review and provide required support and reasonable adjustment where possible.


Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment

Learners may be required to complete an LLN assessment prior to the commencement of the course. – it is a diagnostic process to identify if a prospective student requires LLN support during study.


Hardware/Software requirements

Paragon Polytechnic will provide access to computers/laptops during classroom hours, however for learners to work on assessments tasks and self-study all learners are expected to have access to a laptop , computer or other device with Internet access at their own cost.

Note: Some assessment tasks are completed using a computer and internet, and it is essential for the student to possess basic computer skills.


Physical requirements

Applicants will need to have physical attributes suitable for working in the automotive industry that encompasses manual handling of equipment including lifting and carrying heavy objects within scope of safe working practices.

Qualification Pathways

After successfully completing AUR30620 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology, students may apply for: AUR40216 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis


Course Info

Face-to-face delivery:

This program will be delivered in the classroom. Practical face-to-face training will be provided in an automotive workshop.

Delivery site:

Campus Delivery: Suite 2, Level 6, 250 Collins Street Melbourne 3000

Automotive Workshop: Unit 5, 60 Stubbs St, Kensington VIC 3031

Course duration:

The program will be delivered over 78 weeks (holiday inclusive) with 20 contact hours per week which includes theory education in the classroom and practical training in the fully equipped workshop facility in accordance with a structured approach which meets the requirements of the qualification.

Besides the above-structured learning, students are advised to do appropriately 10 hours per week of unstructured learning.

RPL & Credit Transfer

Learners may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in their chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training (RPL- Recognition of Prior Learning, or Credit Transfer). The granting of course credit may affect course fees as well as the duration of the course.

This process is outlined in Paragon Polytechnic’s Student Admission and Enrolment Policy and Procedures.

If students have previously completed a unit with the same unit code or unit title as in the student’s new course, students may request for a Credit Transfer and they may not have to repeat that unit. Students will need to complete a credit transfer application form and provide a certified copy of the transcript or of the statement of attainment displaying the unit of competency. There is a fee for this process. International students’ applications for credit transfer must be made prior to or at the beginning of the commencement of the course.

Students may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if they can demonstrate that their work and life experiences match one or more of the units in which they have enrolled. They must be able to demonstrate that they have achieved the skills and knowledge equivalent to the learning outcomes of the unit/s. Evidence that demonstrates this achievement may be through a portfolio of evidence. Applications for RPL must be made prior to the commencement of the course – please enquire now if you wish to apply. There is a fee for consideration of RPL applications.
